Terras do Mendo tinto
9.80 €
2015 in the Dão region was marked by a Winter much dryer than the previous one and rain at the start of Springtime.
That rain was decisive in creating water reservoirs in the soil, enabling the plants to survive the dryer Spring and Summer months.
This Terras do Mendo comes to us from Oliveira do Hospital, the heart of the Dão region, near Serra da Estrela. This region is sometimes forgotten as one with a strong tradition of producing marvellous wines.
Especially if you consider the price-quality ratio.
The village’s first name was Ulvária, meaning flood or swamp terrain. From Ulvária it derived to Ulveira and from there, either by analogy or distortion, to Oliveira.
The name “do Hospital” results from the attribution of a Commendation to the Order of Monks of St. John of Jerusalem, Order of the Hospitallers, also known as the Order of Malta.
In 1120, Queen Dna. Teresa, mother of D. Afonso Henriques, donated this village to the Knights of the Order of Malta.
The vineyards in the Mendo Valley, and other smaller ones also located there, are the basis for the company’s wine production.
The vines, a total of 12 hectares, were planted in granitic soils and are 15-20 years old—6.5 hectares of red wine grapes and 5.5 hectares of white. For the reds, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Tinta Roriz; for the whites, Encruzado, Bical, Cerceal-Branco and Arinto.
They also produce olive oil at this estate.
As for the wine you’ve received, the colour ranges into the ruby pallet.
When you smell and taste it, it’s easy to find the assumed presence of red fruits that give it an undisguisable involving touch.
The mix of Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro varieties gives it a strong and convict character.
The rest we leave to you. Discover the rest of this wine, take notes and share them with us by email.
We’d more than welcome your view.
Cheers from your friends at Wome.
Cheers!

WINE MAKING PROCESS
2015 in the Dão region was marked by a Winter much dryer than the previous one. The rain at the start of Springtime created water reservoirs in the soil, enabling the plants to survive the dryer Spring and Summer months. Having been an early year, the vineyard was ready for harvesting earlier than usual. For that reason, harvest began one week earlier than the previous year.
