Salta Piscos

Maria Bernardo is in charge of Quinta do Vilar, which she visited with her father for the first time in the 1970s.
Even then, her little heart smiled.
It was love at first sight for the intimate morphology of the terrain, a closed valley overlooking the Douro river, and also with the wilder landscape, the forests bordering the vineyards, the vastness of trees and Mediterranean scrubland.
The family’s history changed in 2013, and it was then that Maria started dedicating herself fully to the Quinta.
A total reunion between land and woman, described by Maria as a journey of great intensity, learning, discoveries, challenges and passion.
It’s a place that starts with a privileged location but doesn’t stop there. The passion for preserving the nature of this land and honouring those who have worked it for years, transforming it into what now exists, makes this project unique.
An approach between vineyards, nature and art.
Another art is the art of hospitality, which includes a glass of port wine and a wide range of activities such as watching open-air cinema, picking mushrooms, feeding animals, listening to a piano concert in the vineyards, having a picnic, meditation or yoga.
The basic principles of this estate are to regenerate, honour and respect the whole ecosystem where it is located. You can find domestic and wild animals that have felt this space as their own and have returned in recent years. The donkeys are an example of current coexistence dating back to our history. That is the beauty of visiting Quinta do Vilar: being transported to a time which is not the present and where we are received with unique hospitality reinforced by the genuineness of other times.
As for this wine’s name, Salta Piscos is the name given to the stairs in the walls supporting the vineyard. They were manufactured by Galician and Douro workers, the first workers of this magnificent landscape.
