When speaking of the Algarve, you immediately think of sun, beaches and holidays, right? However, the Algarve has much more than that to offer.

It’s where you can find incredible food (exquisite razor-clam rice or trumpet conch with red beans, for example) and wines that’ll have you going back for more.
That’s the effect this João Clara has – it’ll leave you wanting more and more.

It all started during the 1970s with João Maria Alves, also known as João Clara.

The first three hectares of the estate were bought in 1974 and immediately planted with the Negra Mole and Syrah varieties.

In 2006, and with support from António Maçanita in the oenology department, the first bottles of wine launched by Joaquim Alves, João Clara’s only son, reach the market.

After Joaquim passed away, his wife, Edite Alves, and their daughters embraced the project and took over the estate’s management.

Among the many papers left behind by Joaquim, there was one referring to planting white grape varieties and a wine cellar. These were the wishes Ana, Joana and Edite Alves made come true and continue nurturing to this day.

Nowadays, it’s the oenologist Joana Maçanita who helps in making this family’s dreams come true, aiding in producing a wine that isn’t easily forgotten.

We have to mention the estate’s most famous resident – the donkey Xavier.
He’s part of the family and brightens the day of all those who visit him.

As for the wine you’re holding, you’ll quickly understand that it’s a different type of wine, with a very interesting varietal mix (Arinto, Verdelho, Alvarinho and Moscatel). It pairs exceptionally well with the razor clam rice we mentioned earlier.

Later, when you finish the bottle, you’ll have the “what now?” problem to solve.

This wine will indeed leave you asking and going back for more.

Winemaking process
Careful manual harvesting with grape selection in the wine cellar, direct press on the whole grape bunch. Staging in stainless steel vats with no lee contact at a controlled temperature of approximately 12-14°C.
Tasting Notes
João Clara White is a pale coloured wine with a predominance of fruit aromas and floral notes. Very fruity and elegant in the mouth. Finishes with great texture and aroma.
Launch
17 000 bottles in June of 2019.
ABV: 12.5%
Storage and Serving
Store at 6-8°C. Serve at 10°C to be consumed at 12°C.
Gastronomy
Pairs well with salads, grilled fish and white meats.

Recipe

Oven-roasted fish with scented potatoes and beans with palm oil

Ingredients

Fresh fish (according to your preference or what’s fresh at your fishmonger)
Aromatic herbs (lemon-thyme)
Garlic
Salt
Pepper
White wine
Olive oil
Small potatoes
Oregano
1 can of white beans (500 gr)
100 ml of palm oil
Onion

Preparation

Cut the potatoes in four without peeling and boil them in a pot with plenty of water and some salt. When they´re cooked, drain them and then add chopped garlic, plenty of olive oil and sprinkle with oregano.
Make a few cuts in the fish to place garlic cloves and stuff the fish belly with the aromatic herbs. Place the fish in a tray and add a good drizzle of olive oil and white wine. Cover the tray with aluminium foil and place it in the oven at 180°C for 40 minutes.
In a pot, sauté chopped garlic in palm oil.
When the garlic is soft, add the chopped onion and when the onion becomes soft, add the beans. Cook for 5 minutes on medium-low heat. Cook until the flavours combine.
